operations.

Learning Objectives & Outcomes:
By the end of the course, attendees should be able to identify threat and consequence drivers, complete
a basic pipeline risk assessment, and determine what preventive and mitigative actions may reduce risk.

Fundamentals of Risk

Define hazard, threat, probability, consequence, and risk in the context of pipelines approaches.
Differentiate between qualitative, semi-quantitative, and quantitative risk assessment
Understand how pipeline risk assessments support compliance with CSA Z662, API 1160, and ASME B31.8S.
Identify the characteristics of a robust vs. inadequate risk assessment programs

Threat Identification

Classify threats as time-dependent, stable, or random using accepted threat models.
Identify how corrosion, geohazards, third-party damage, and operational issues should be incorporated into risk assessments.

Methodologies

Compare index/scoring models, relative risk models, and probabilistic quantitative methods.
Evaluate the appropriateness of different methodologies for given scenarios.
Identify the key data inputs required for risk assessment and explain their limitations.

Risk Evaluation and Mitigation
Understand how operators use risk assessment results to prioritize digs, repairs, and other mitigations.
Assess preventive and mitigative measures are appropriately incorporated.
