Course Description

Non-metallic Pipeline Systems
Learn about non-metallic pipeline systems for the transportation of oil and gas fluids. This course
addresses regulatory and code requirements and includes case histories and field examples to
demonstrate practical aspects of design, construction, operation, and maintenance.

Objectives:
Learn why non-metallic pipeline systems have become very common in the oil and gas industry over the
past 30 years even though the failure rate of some of these materials is still higher than steel pipelines.
Methods for successfully specifying, handling, installing, and operating will be discussed, along with the
unique construction methods, directional properties, and different behaviours that distinguish these
systems from steel pipelines and contribute to successful application.
Learn about design and code-of-construction requirements in CSA Z662 Oil and Gas Pipelines plus
additional regulatory requirements. This course also explores the history and gradual enhancement of
practical engineering and construction practices that have made many of these materials the preferred
choice for challenging issues such as corrosion.

Topics:

  • Regulatory Requirements

  • Manufacturing Significance

  • Multi-directional Properties

  • Reinforced Composite Pipelines

  • Thermoplastic Lined Pipelines

  • Polyethylene Pipelines

  • Corrosion resistance

  • Specifications

  • Unique Regulatory Requirements

Our Group 10 Academy Instructor: Frank Gareau, P. Eng.

Frank is a P.Eng. and has over 45 years of corrosion materials and asset integrity experience in relation to pipelines, pressure equipment and tanks in the energy industry in both upstream midstream and refining. Frank has worked for large mature oil and gas companies with global operations and has been principal engineer with asset integrity and engineering service organizations. He has completed applied research projects for many of the non-metallic pipeline systems, has specialization in management systems, risk processes, and codes and regulations across multiple jurisdictions, and has provided training for regulators and industry alike.

Frank has been the primary subject matter expert in multiple high profile incident investigations including failure analysis support and root cause analysis.

Benefits of Training with Group 10 Engineering:
Group 10 Engineering is a leader in pipeline and pressure equipment integrity management services and
therefore in a perfect position to provide a significant amount of added value in our training. Our training
sessions include practical applications, comparisons of jurisdictional requirements, information on best
practices, and practical interpretation and application of the various tasks required.
