Course Description
Pipeline and Pressure Piping Requirements – Regulatory, CSA Z662, and ASME B31.3

Objectives:
This course addresses regulatory, code, and practical experiences for the design, construction, inspection, operation, maintenance, and repair of pipeline and process piping systems used in the oil and gas industry. This course content is based on CSA Z662, CSA B51, ASME B31.3, and standards referenced in these codes, and also includes discussion on ASTM material standards and ASME Section IX “Welding”.

Federal, Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan requirements will be addressed, along with examples of regulatory forms. Practical examples will extend beyond the straightforward application of regulations and standards. The course will also discuss the differences between requirements for pipeline and piping systems, as well as the jurisdictional boundaries between pipelines and facility pressure piping.

Topics:

  • Introduction to Laws, Regulations, Jurisdiction and Related Codes and Standards

  • ASME B51 Boiler, Pressure Vessel, and Pressure Piping Code

  • Provincial Acts and Regulations

  • Specifications

  • Regulatory Requirements for Quality Control Programs and Piping Forms

  • Responsibilities: Owner, Designer, Manufacturer, Fabricator, Erector, Owner's Inspector

  • Due Diligence

  • Design, Construction Practices

  • Materials

  • Pressure Testing

  • Welding / Joining

  • Inspection and Testing

  • Significant Construction Code Differences (CSA Z662 versus B31.3)

  • Practical Field Examples (including Sour and Low Temperature Applications)

  • Non-code Topics such as Service Requirements
